Today, my step-son Alec is graduating from 8th grade, I wanted to give him something thoughtful and fun for a teenager. In my free time (when I’m not making paper beads and videos about paper beads :), I am on youtube looking at craft ideas and demos. Last night I stumbled upon Craftside’s How To Make Altered Paper Jewelry video, and I thought I had to share this with you. This is a cool way of packaging your paper bead necklace or bracelet for gift giving. In my case, I made a paper bead out of a twenty dollar bill. Jenn Mason author of Altered Paper Jewelry is going to show us how…….

here is the video, I had fun watching it last night, enjoy.
Instead of making the plastic tubing necklace (which I think is very cool), I thought it would be a nice way to give money as gift to someone instead of just stuffing it in a boring envelope. As you know by now, I make paper beads out of anything.

I wish I had the double sided card stock, I just used a water color paper instead and tore out a page of an old dictionary with the word success.

On the blank page of the flap I wrote: “This is actually a necklace which you can wear around your neck, in case of emergency please follow these steps: 1) Take the necklace off your neck 2) Get a hold of scissors or any sharp edge object 3) Cut the string 4) Slide the silver ring off the dollar bead 5) Unfold the twenty dollar bill and enjoy 🙂

Another day of turning the ordinary into extraordinary

Here’s the tutorial on how to make cone shaped paper beads as promised 🙂 One might think that you cut the paper differently………it is cut exactly the same way as you would your regular triangle strip of paper. The trick is pushing the bottom part of the paper bead towards the center, as shown in this video! So, let’s get ready with your magazine pages, yard stick or a long straight edge wood (I used to measure with a plank of wood left over from a remodel I did in my dining room). You can use a heavier card stock paper like this used poster for example;

I did the measurements on the back of the poster; the base is 1/2 inch and the triangles will look like this before you cut them up:

Then you cut them up into strips, you can use scissors or exacto knife

And then you start rolling as shown here:
An then you let them dry on tooth picks and take pictures 🙂

And the fun part, making them into jewelry, that would have to be another day.

I don’t feel “put together” when I am not wearing a pair of earrings. Do you feel the same way? Like, you’re missing something. I love wearing paper beads earrings because they are so lightweight and colorful. Now that the weather is getting warmer I thought how nice it is to just put one of these Every Day Earrings on and you instantly feel that somehow you made a difference in someone’s life……..

The earrings are very simple to make, just the very basic technique of connecting them with a wire loop. The beads I used for all the earrings are the extra small olive shape paper beads and small round paper beads.

This is just one olive shaped paper bead, simple yet beautiful!

This would look pretty with summer dresses…

Perfect with white shirt and blue jeans

A little bit dressier

Another day of taking the ordinary to extraordinary

Lei is a Hawaiian word for anything strung together to be worn as an adornment. The chunky paper beads in cream and reds inspired me to make this Paper Bead Lei and bracelet set to look like a yummy dessert much like one of these images I found on the internet.

Coco wood chips are strung on a beading wire with the chunky paper beads.

It also much resembled my all time favorite dessert, the banana split!

You can tell I have dessert on my mind when I made this necklace

Another day of turning the ordinary into extraordinary!

I am showcasing today Jennifer’s paper beads of paperthisandthat, she is an avid crafter and just recently discovered paper beads! Jennifer is another Etsian, and has a shop that sells exactly paper this and that 🙂 I bought something from her shop the other day, Three Dimensional Quilling, sorry she only has one copy of this book, but I will make sure to share with you some of my creations.

I will have Jennifer tell you something about herself, in her own words:
“I have been crafting for a number of years. I make candles and soap plus jewelry just to name a few of my venues. I stumbled across paper crafts a year ago when I had to come up with a card in a hurry and had to make something with what I had on hand. I started researching card making and then expanded into scrapbooking. It was not long when I became interested in quilling and paper jewelry. Now I found paper beads and having a blast at making them. Now I can combine 2 great loves together… Paper and jewelry making. As I go further with the beads, I plan on making the paper beads and making quilled pendants to go with them.”
Here’s some of Jennifer’s creation:
What I love about making paper beads is the calming process of rolling the paper and get pleasantly surprised with the outcome.
She made the Comic Strip Ladder Bracelet out of the comic pages! It is neat how she strung that with hemp cord, just goes so well together.
You can custom order this item from her etsy shop. To see more of her work and ideas, you can visit her blog:
