Playing With Paper Doll- My Avatar

Posted on Mar 5, 2010 in Other Crafts & Crafty People | 2 comments

I bought this book Journal Spilling by Diana Trout at Amazon.com after Hanna reviewed her book on her blog, and I’m not sorry I did.  I was was afraid to try my hand at “messing around” with my journal but this book helped me overcome my fear and I hope you will be encouraged to also try this form of art.  I’m not very good at drawing but I practiced and practiced and somehow was able to draw my “avatar’s” face that resembles me -ON A GOOD DAY!

On page 42 of Diana’s book is how to Make a Self Portrait:

Here’s how I came up with my self portrait.  I really would rather call it my avatar since this is how I would like to be perceived.  Kind of putting your best “face” forward.  On a good day this is how I hope to look like.  I cut out my top and skirt from my favorite catalog (I don’t go to the mall anymore, I do all my shopping online), and drew a face of me (kind of).

This is how envisioned myself: nice hair, make-up on, manicured hands, skinny jeans, high heels and a bag which I crocheted myself on a good day when I got all my ducks in a row, did I say that right?  ‘Sorry, English is my second language.  I will not be complete without my paper bead necklace.

Here I am on my nicely painted journal from an earlier post.

I still don’t have the heart to just throw paints and scribble on my journal (Sorry, Hanna) but I am just getting my feet wet.

Let me tell you this, it was so much fun, I was a kid again, transported to the time when I played with my paper dolls.  Would anybody want to try this with me?  We can schedule a play date, meet here with all your cut out tops and bottoms for your paper dolls and play, just leave me a comment here or email me.

I hope I have inspired you to try something new today  and fearlessly crafting.

  1. This is great. I’m slowly working at trying new art forms that feel uncomfortable. Just blogged about that, in fact–that sometimes the experiments come out great, and sometimes not so much, but it’s still fun to try new things. Looks like yours came out great!

  2. wow looks interesting i always wanted to start a journal
