We have been working with the men and women in the Philippines in coming up with making quality paper beads made out from old magazines and catalogs. I am very impressed with the workmanship and the fact that they are not just beautiful and durable but also, that they are made in a clean environment and lightly finished with non toxic varnish. Paper bead making has become popular with women in poorer countries because they have readily available materials; glue and paper. The tool can be anything from hand made dowel to metal wire and lots of patience and time.
While it is true that paper beads can be made by anyone even children, the smaller rounder shaped paper beads require a lot of practice, dexterity and time consuming. In places like the Philippines where jobs are scarce, a country that relies mostly on overseas workers, it is a job that jobless men and housewives supplementing their income appreciate.

Strands of 10 mm size paper beads

This ring is a very easy project but a nice way to showcase that one single paper bead that interests you. I found this one bead from a strand of paper beads, I like the stripe pattern of the bead. The one good thing about the paper bead is the large hole, perfect for hiding knots. I used .8mm elastic for this project and flower spacers for the band and bead caps for the paper bead.
What you do is cut a piece of elastic, use a bead stopper on one end and string according to this pattern: paper bead, bead cap, spacers (the number would depend on the size of your ring) and bead cap. You would then tie a square knot and put a dab of gs hypocement (glue) to make it secure. When it is dry, cut the excess elastic and pull the knot inside the bead.

For the ends, I used magnetic clasp and non tarnish wire to wire wrap the ends of the leather.
I used a three strand finding for this project and silver spacers. I like to use this kind of spacer because tit is a good cover for the paper beads which normally has a bigger hole.
This would also look good as a necklace, it doesn’t have to be three strand, a single strand is just as pretty.
