Paper Bead Makers in the Philippines turning out beautiful paper beads

Posted on Jun 6, 2009 in Paper Bead Creations | 5 comments

We have been working with the men and women in the Philippines in coming up with making quality paper beads made out from old magazines and catalogs. I am very impressed with the workmanship and the fact that they are not just beautiful and durable but also, that they are made in a clean environment and lightly finished with non toxic varnish. Paper bead making has become popular with women in poorer countries because they have readily available materials; glue and paper. The tool can be anything from hand made dowel to metal wire and lots of patience and time.

While it is true that paper beads can be made by anyone even children, the smaller rounder shaped paper beads require a lot of practice, dexterity and time consuming. In places like the Philippines where jobs are scarce, a country that relies mostly on overseas workers, it is a job that jobless men and housewives supplementing their income appreciate.

They came up with different size of paper beads that are just perfect for jewelry making.

Paper Bead Ring

Posted on May 26, 2009 in Paper Bead Creations | 2 comments

This ring is a very easy project but a nice way to showcase that one single paper bead that interests you.  I found this one bead from a strand of paper beads, I like the stripe pattern of the bead.  The one good thing about the paper bead is the large hole, perfect for hiding knots.  I used .8mm elastic for this project and flower spacers for the band and bead caps for the paper bead.

What you do is cut a piece of elastic, use a bead stopper on one end and string according to this pattern: paper bead, bead cap, spacers (the number would depend on the size of your ring) and bead cap.  You would then tie a square knot and put a dab of gs hypocement (glue) to make it secure.  When it is dry, cut the excess elastic and pull the knot inside the bead.

Leather in Red

Posted on May 26, 2009 in Paper Bead Creations | Comments Off on Leather in Red

I made this piece intended to be a man’s bracelet.  The contrast of the red paper beads and black leather cord is striking.  Red in some culture is believed to ward off evil spirits.  The color red also symbolizes joy, good luck, courage…….

This bracelet is finished with wire wrap on both ends, unlike the other leather bracelets from previous post.  The red paper beads is about 8mm in size (Red Paper Bead at Aubrey’s Beads) and has big enough holes to accomodate the leather cord.

From time to time I would like to feature other beader’s work – Pamela Rae is an avid beader who just recently discovered paper beads.  She has a very good eye for color and she loves to mix metal, glass and paper beads.  I think she did a good job!  Judge for yourself.

Pistachio in Paper Beads Bracelet

Posted on May 25, 2009 in Paper Bead Creations | 1 comment

I am always fascinated by the colors and patterns that come out of the finished paper bead, no two are alike.  When I saw these paper bead, pistachio came to my mind.  I mixed it with peridot chips, and it came out pretty, no calories, you know how it’s hard to stop eating the real thing?  These olive shaped paper beads are great for bracelets.

I used a three strand finding for this project and silver spacers.  I like to use this kind of spacer because tit is a good cover for the paper beads which normally has a bigger hole.

This would also look good as a necklace, it doesn’t have to be three strand, a single strand is just as pretty.
