Story Bracelet in Paper Beads
April 22nd is Earth Day and will be celebrated nationwide. It is amazing to see the things we have achieved over the years in terms of making efforts to be more earth friendly.
In honor of this day, I made this whimsical bracelet, which is made out of paper beads. In one of my trips to the old book store we have in town I came across Aesop’s Fables and I thought it would be fun to incorporate the stories with the paper beads. I photo copied the pages and then cut out the words and the animal faces to fit the photo charms and set them with Diamond Glaze (buy Diamond Glaze). I like that it does not only tell a story but teaches a lesson. If you would like the whole story as it was written I will be happy to email them to you. Anyway, here is the story bracelet of The Fox and the Grapes from Aesop’s Fables.
Paper Gems-Hand Made from the Philippines
I talked to my sister Joann today; in fact I talk to her everyday about paper beads. Well, we talk about other stuff but since couple of months ago, it has been mostly paper beads. She takes pride in making them look like something that takes on a transformation (not simply rolled paper!). I call it “paper beads for grown ups.” And I have been thinking of a better name for these rolled strips of paper. They don’t fit into other categories, like glass beads or crystals. Nor do they fit solely into broad categories, like “Hand made crafts.” So I came up with this idea of calling them “Paper Gems.” This would get a little getting use to, but I think it’s appropriate, and helps describe the difference between the fun craft for children and what is amazing jewelry for adults! Here is a finished two strand necklace that Kayla made. Kayla is my assistant, and she has a natural talent for coordinating colors.
Reuse Egg Cartons for Paper Beads
An egg carton is one of those perfect containers for small things like beads (specially seed beads), paper clips etc. Just to make it more fun and to give color to a desk or work space you can paint it with leftover craft paint. I made one, and put a handle to it to hold my paper beads which are really small. It is the perfect container when you want to separate colors and size. The handle is fashioned from a leftover craft wire, you just punch a hole or just stick it into the carton and wrap it around one or two times, and so with the other side, it make it easy to carry around.

When you say paper bead what comes to mind is kid’s craft, rolling strips of colorful paper and stringing them to make colorful long necklaces. It doesn’t have to be just long colorful necklaces for kids. You can certainly make paper beads in all shapes and sizes – long and thin, small and round, and tiny ones. These different size beads will allow you to design beautiful wearable paper bead jewelry. Today, I have finished these two necklaces made from paper beads.
