If you want instant gratification, Paper Bead Elastic Bracelets are a a breeze to make. If you are not into wire wrapping or any other form of beading technique, but have the eye for color, stringing your paper beads in jewelry makers’ elastic gives your work a finished look. I love these colored glass rings in big and small sizes because they are somehow made for my big round paper beads and diamond shaped paper beads for the smaller rings.

This looks elegant on the wrist.

The smaller glass rings were just perfect for the diamond shaped paper beads – which are actually made by gluing to strips of triangle pieces together.

I would love to wear several of these at the same time.

These big chunky paper beads are so much fun, you could still see the words in some of the beads. I suggest to use a .7 or .8mm elastic for these projects.

Prayer beads are used by various cultures as a form of devotion and meditation. Saying the rosary to me has a special meaning because my mother taught it to me as a little child, now I use it to take my mind off from worry sometimes, I know I should be using it more as devotion. I am sharing this with you to use paper beads to make prayer beads, I would like to come up with other forms of prayer beads. In the meantime, I am sharing with you Rosaries that I made. Most of the materials and instruction are available at Our Lady Of Rosary Makers, they are a not for profit organization.

I made mine out of olive shaped paper beads because the original Rosary that our church gives away for free is made out of plastic beads that resembles the olive shaped paper beads, like this one below.

The plastic findings are very inexpensive and this would make great gifts.

I also made it in silver.

You see how some people hang it on their car, this would be great for that purpose as well. I have the Virgin Mary in my backyard, so I took a picture of it on Her.

Silk cord is used to make these rosaries, you could also make them with eye pins using the rosary loop technique.

Looking for inexpensive presents that are at the same time thoughtful? Why not give paper beads? They are very popular nowadays, and any of your friends or family will surely appreciate something that is all hand made by you. I am lucky to have a scrap booking store right next to me and they always have some clever ideas on how to make gift bags and little envelopes. So I am sharing this with you and what I call wordy beads.

These are hand selected magazine pages made into paper beads with the words still visible on them after they have been rolled.

Here’s step by step how-to on the envelope:

1st, you take a double sided square paper 8 x 8 or 12 x12 depending on how small or big you want your envelope to be. In this photo I am using a scrap booking paper, cut down to 8 x 8 square.

2nd step, you will take one corner of the paper and fold it in half forming a triangle.

3rd step, you will take the two sides and overlap it in the center make sure you crease them really well.

4th step, take the flap down and glue it down or apply decorative tape.

You could also use glue dots and embellish the flap if you want to.

Last Step, fill up it up with hand made paper beads or paper beads jewelry

Simple yet Beautiful!

Easy, breezy !

You can mix them with glass beads and firepolished crystals.

Somedays…wear them all as a bracelet, I’m sure they work well as head bands too.

If you do not want them on elastics, you can string them on a beading wire with magnetic closure. Wear several for a dramatic effect, kind of like Zulu Princess style

These are from Aileen, I especially love the mauve color bead, the confetti looking ones and the peachy colored ones. They are all beautiful.

These ones are from Patty, she made them on her trip to Aruba, and they are made from travel brochures and she actually rolled these beads on the sand from the beach! How cool is that? You will be getting beads that has sand from the beaches in Aruba You can check out Patty’s other hobby at punchneedlechix.

These babies came all the way from France, Claire shares tutorials and all sorts of craft in her blog Papelhilo. I just love the bigger beads in caramel color which would be really good as focal beads.

I have received these barrel shaped paper beads from Kari, the red ones is so rich in color and the black and white patterned beads almost look like the zentangles that I did. They will look pretty with spacers in between them.

Gisela’s beads, are lacquered to a glass like finish! Do you want to share with us your technique They are beautiful, love the pastel colors and the big tube ones would make a nice focal bead as well. She sent us enough, I will make sure everybody get some of her beads.

Next, is Elim’s and sister Liz’s paper beads. You can see more of Elim’s paper bead creations here. She sent it to me strung, olive shaped ones, spacers and barrel shaped, Maybe Elim can tell us the type of paper she used, they are so pretty.

Liz’s beads is a nice cotton candy pink with swirls of chocolate brown, I just love the pink and brown combination, as you can see here:

Last but not least, is from Christine, what a mixture of lively colors; hot pink, baby pink, olives, maroon, aqua blue and I especially like the black bead.

So, there it is folks, some really nice paper beads each one hand rolled by you! Hopefully I will get the rest of the beads this week, irregardless I will be sending out your kits on July 15th. I will be sharing with you my sister’s beads as well, mine and Kayla’s.

I have created a new category: My Paper Beads to feature paper beads that are made by paper bead enthusiasts from other parts of the world. Hilde Debruyn who is from Belgium, combines her paper beads with unusual beads and finds to achieve that organic look. She carefully describes each one of her creation, the kind of paper and beads she used:

This necklace I made with scrap booking paper pasted on small pieces of cardboard. In stead of scrap booking paper I made some similar necklaces with starched papers too.

Black and White

I started this necklace with a big silver bead (I kept this bead from a broken necklace). I completed it with little silver cube beads and paperbeads. I found the paper for this beads in my letterbox. They are made with promotional leaflets with a white background. On the other side I put a double string with ancient African tradebeads. They are made of glass. I bougth them in an African shop in Brussels.

Silver and African Beads

Here I made a very long necklace (4 times the usual length). It’s very colorful. I made it from magazine papers and I joined a lot of little yellow squares from an old necklace from my mother. I took the picture on a stone in the shape of a heart. The stone is carved. As you can see there are small roses on it.

A Heart Of Stone

This necklace is also made with magazine papers. I chose papers with an orange colour in it, so it could be combined with the silk textile bead. A friend of mine made it for me. I also used a big coral and some small orange-red beads.

With Orange Fabric Bead

This necklace is photographed on a small raffia tablecloth from Congo (a present from my aunt). It’s made of gift wrapping paper (craft paper with stripes) I used a red spherical and some olive wooden beads from Santorini (Greece).

Red and Green

The tubes are made of gift wrapping paper with little colorful figures on it (for a gift for children). I used small wooden beads, and also a very big wooden bead and a red bead (dry vegetable material).

TUBES

We still have room for the Paper Bead Trade, you can sign up by e mailing me your address (Email Me button is on the right hand side).

Thank you Hilde, for sharing your beautiful work. We will be posting ideas and inspiration for the Paper Bead Trade in the next week or so.

This cuff which I call the Golden Shellback’s Cuff is encrusted with shells and paper beads. I learned about Golden Shellback when my son joined the U.S. Navy. One of the most precious thing he brought home was the Golden Shellback Certificate which I framed and now have a special place in my home. Wikepedia defines Golden Shellback as:

The ceremony of Crossing the Line is an initiation rite in the Royal Navy, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and other navies that commemorates a sailor’s first crossing of the Equator. Originally, the tradition was created as a test for seasoned sailors to ensure their new shipmates were capable of handling long rough times at sea. Sailors who have already crossed the Equator are nicknamed (Trusty) Shellbacks, often referred to as Sons of Neptune; those who have not are nicknamed (Slimy) Pollywogs.

The Certificate itself is like a work of art, with drawings of Mermaids, King Neptune, crabs and porpoises and other denizens of the sea as what they’re called.

My collection of shells.

And paper beads.

The foundation of this cuff is 140 lb paper that I folded into a round and covered with fleece.

I used hot glue gun to adhere the shells and paper beads into the cuff.

The olive shaped paper beads and the smaller round beads were used to fill in the gaps.

This is such a conversation piece and so easy to do. You can purchase shells and some of them are colored at your local craft store.

So, here is what I came up with the paper beads made from the paper printed with the beautiful sky image I aptly named morning glory. I mixed it with fiery orange beads, purplish mother of pearl stick pearls and olive shaped paper beads in lavender and orange.

Many of you have e-mailed me on how to cut paper into triangle strips ready for making beautiful paper beads. When I started experimenting on how to make paper beads I get frustrated when I get those odd shape looking ones. One day, as I was opening a package from my sister (she ships on a regular basis paper beads that they have made), there was a small pouch tucked in containing different odd shaped paper beads. She had a note for me that these are “rejects” but she did not have the heart to throw them away. They were beautiful, there’s one that’s shaped like a bell, a Christmas tree, a bottle, an egg and they are all unique. So, even if you don’t cut a perfectly proportioned triangle don’t despair this will add character to your jewelry:) Anyway, here is a video on how to cut them into strips of triangles.

The paper beads in this necklace were made from Recycled Avon Magazines.
