Kayla just finished her paper beads today, and we have also received Lynn’s. We are mailing today kits to those who sent the first batch of paper beads, Kayla and I had fun sorting them out. I love the thought that we are now connected in someway, when we wear in our jewelry paper beads made by each one of us. I took a picture before sorting them out, sort of a big bowl of “Paper Bead Soup.”

Paper Bead Soup

Lynn’s came today. Your beads made it to the Paper Bead Soup Lynn!

Kayla’s other hobby is scrap booking, and her paper beads were made from left over paper.

The rest of the kits will be shipped on Tuesday.

I would love to see what you are going to be making with your kit; be it bracelet, necklace, earrings, a brooch? I am hoping that everybody would participate in our “Show and Tell” portion of the trade. So here’s what I’m going to do: the first 10 that submits an image (email it to me), will get a unique strand of paper beads made by the Philippine Women.

I want to thank everybody that participated in the trade, I hope you had fun as much as we did. Anyone, who would like to host the next Paper Bead Trade? Let me know and we will announce it here, too.

I was supposed to do a tutorial on crocheting with beads (the easy way), but I just had to interrupt today’s post (or tomorrow), I am too excited when I received these packages today from you guys! Let me share with you the paper beads I got in the mail today, all eight of them!

These are from Aileen, I especially love the mauve color bead, the confetti looking ones and the peachy colored ones. They are all beautiful.

These ones are from Patty, she made them on her trip to Aruba, and they are made from travel brochures and she actually rolled these beads on the sand from the beach! How cool is that? You will be getting beads that has sand from the beaches in Aruba You can check out Patty’s other hobby at punchneedlechix.

These babies came all the way from France, Claire shares tutorials and all sorts of craft in her blog Papelhilo. I just love the bigger beads in caramel color which would be really good as focal beads.

I have received these barrel shaped paper beads from Kari, the red ones is so rich in color and the black and white patterned beads almost look like the zentangles that I did. They will look pretty with spacers in between them.

Gisela’s beads, are lacquered to a glass like finish! Do you want to share with us your technique They are beautiful, love the pastel colors and the big tube ones would make a nice focal bead as well. She sent us enough, I will make sure everybody get some of her beads.

Next, is Elim’s and sister Liz’s paper beads. You can see more of Elim’s paper bead creations here. She sent it to me strung, olive shaped ones, spacers and barrel shaped, Maybe Elim can tell us the type of paper she used, they are so pretty.

Liz’s beads is a nice cotton candy pink with swirls of chocolate brown, I just love the pink and brown combination, as you can see here:

Last but not least, is from Christine, what a mixture of lively colors; hot pink, baby pink, olives, maroon, aqua blue and I especially like the black bead.

So, there it is folks, some really nice paper beads each one hand rolled by you! Hopefully I will get the rest of the beads this week, irregardless I will be sending out your kits on July 15th. I will be sharing with you my sister’s beads as well, mine and Kayla’s.

Kumihimo just sounds complicated, I recently found out that it’s not. Couple of weeks ago, I was at the San Diego Fair and happen to stop by at the San Diego Weaver’s Guild booth, check out their website it is interesting the classes and programs that they offer. It took a whole 5 minutes for me to learn it there, my video is longer. I made a few bracelets and even incorporated paper beads, after all this is paperbeads the blog

You need: craft foam 3 inches square, cut out a circle in the center of the foam and 2 slits an inch apart in all four sides, total of eight slits. Please refer to above image for slit placements.

Here’s what I did with paper beads.

I just added different shaped paper beads at the closure on this one.

To add beads to the braid itself, this video tutorial I think, explains it best:

It is a really cool friendship bracelets for grown ups How about kumhimo with paper beads dangles like this one for Idea # 6? Eveline has also great design ideas for paper beads here. For those of you who have paper bead ideas in your blog or website please email me so I can put a link here.

These look really nice worn together, and had lots of compliments!

Sanja is one of our readers who like me, takes pleasure in taking pictures of her finished paper beads outside, in her garden. As you know, outside in natural day light is the best way to take photos of your jewelry. Sanja made these paper beads out of garden magazines and they came out really pretty, hell000 summer!

Sanja’s other hobby is photography, you can tell she’s having fun with these Daisies are such happy flowers, don’t you think?

This bracelet was inspired by one of our tutorials. I wish I have her hands

I remember Kayla cut out flowers from one of her mother’s garden magazines and made it into earrings.

She also love incorporating shells into her jewelry making, you can read more about it here. The long three strand necklace held by shells is a nice way to use the long paper bead tubes.

I can almost smell the ocean with these colors

I consider this Design Idea # 4 You can substitute the shells with a 3 strand finding and you don’t even need a clasp, this will just go over your head. She certainly looks fetching don’t you think? Do you have a beach wedding to go to? This would just be perfect!

Any suggestions for Design Idea # 5? It would be greatly appreciated. If you do, just hit the Contact Me link on your right hand side.

I put in First on the title of this post because I am hoping that there will be a Second and Third Paper Bead Trade for this year at least.  I am excited about this because it’s like going into a party with like minded individuals yet you don’t really have to go anywhere and just be in your pajamas sipping your morning coffee.  A few of you have suggestions on how we are going to do this, I like Eveline’s idea the most (thank you for the suggesting this).  So here it is ladies;

PAPER BEAD TRADE RULES:

First you will email me or leave me a comment (would be nice) to sign up – 16 participants is ideal. In your email you need to send me your full name and mailing address.

You will make 20-30 paper beads of different size if possible if not whatever size and shape you are comfortable making

You will then mail your paper beads to me – address is on the envelope you see in the image below

After I get all these nice paper beads of different sizes coming from all over the world, I will then sort it out, with Kayla’s help of course (she has a really good eye for color) and match it with beads that I have in my collection.

I will then mail you other participant/s paper beads with coordinating beads and findings (elastics and ear wires) for you to make into elastic bracelet and matching earrings (if you like).

You will take a photo of your finished creation and email them to me and post it in your blog or flickr to share with every one else.

You will have until July 15 to mail your paper beads to me. Note: not for me to receive it but for you to mail it, I realize that for those who are from another country that it will take probably 3 weeks for me to get it, just ordinary mail so you don’t have to pay for expensive postage.

This Paper Bead Trade is open until June 30th.

In the next day or so I will be posting examples of VERY simple bracelet and earrings that is beginner, beginner project.

After all this is just our first try at doing this right? If successful, then we can move on to bigger projects

Remember: There is no right or wrong way of doing paper beads, they are all unique and hand made, so please, please, do not be intimidated by this.

Tell your friends, we need to have at least 16 participants, my sister Joann is excited about this whole thing, it is her first time as well and if it make you feel better, she has never strung a single bracelet in her life, sorry Ann…

If you have questions, please feel free to email me, I read and answer all of them although I would prefer that you leave me a comment, other people might have a similar question.

Next post: Hilde’s amazing paper bead jewelry and more on the paper bead trade. Start rolling now ladies, WE CAN DO THIS!

I am showcasing today Jennifer’s paper beads of paperthisandthat, she is an avid crafter and just recently discovered paper beads! Jennifer is another Etsian, and has a shop that sells exactly paper this and that I bought something from her shop the other day, Three Dimensional Quilling, sorry she only has one copy of this book, but I will make sure to share with you some of my creations.

I will have Jennifer tell you something about herself, in her own words:

“I have been crafting for a number of years. I make candles and soap plus jewelry just to name a few of my venues. I stumbled across paper crafts a year ago when I had to come up with a card in a hurry and had to make something with what I had on hand. I started researching card making and then expanded into scrapbooking. It was not long when I became interested in quilling and paper jewelry. Now I found paper beads and having a blast at making them. Now I can combine 2 great loves together… Paper and jewelry making. As I go further with the beads, I plan on making the paper beads and making quilled pendants to go with them.”

Here’s some of Jennifer’s creation:

What I love about making paper beads is the calming process of rolling the paper and get pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

She made the Comic Strip Ladder Bracelet out of the comic pages! It is neat how she strung that with hemp cord, just goes so well together.

You can custom order this item from her etsy shop. To see more of her work and ideas, you can visit her blog:

I hope we have inspired you today, turning the ordinary into extraordinary.

Gail Guillory is one of our local avid beaders, who also just recently discovered paper beads. She loves the different colors and how you can just make it like any other bead but even more special.

Gail was kind enough to let us feature her Flower Bib that she made to wear at the Pasadena Bead Show last August.

She was inspired by a pattern from off the cover of Bead & Button Magazine that she knew would look amazing using paper beads. So she put together her own version of the necklace, using bright pinks and beautiful purples.

We LOVE her creation & we LOVE sharing new ideas and designs, so feel free to send us anything you have made using paper beads
