A Tutorial on Saucer Shapes

Posted on Sep 23, 2010 in Paper Bead Creations | 25 comments

Is it a spacer or a saucer?  A button or a charm?  However you may call this saucer shaped bead it is versatile in its uses and most amazing thing of all it is made of paper!  Finally, here is the tutorial, it took awhile for my sister Joann to put a video together and I am writing out for you the instructions.

These instructions is for one large saucer bead which measures about 1 3/4 inch in diameter.

25 triangle strips ( 1/2 inch at the base and 17 inches long) – this is the first part of the bead

13 triangle strips (3/16 inch at the base and 17 inches long) – this the 2nd part of the beads

metal or bamboo roller

elmer’s glue or any white glue

You will hold the 25 triangle strips in your hand and roll the first 2 or 3 inches with a roller (how big your roller is will determine the hole of your bead).  You will continue rolling (you can take out the roller at this point), hold it tightly while doing it and glue the ends as you go as seen here.  After the first 25 strips are rolled and glued, you will then take the 13 strips and join it to where you ended the first round and do the same thing.  Here’s the rest of the instructions:

If you want to have a particular color in mind not the magazine colors you see above, you can paint them into different colors!

  2. Wow, I never noticed this was on the site before. I was looking at the video and wanted to know the measurements. I’m glad I checked here. Thank you.

  3. I was wondering how she gets the second set of strips to stick so easily. Are they pre glued or have tape on them? I’m going to give these a try! Thanks!

  4. Thank you for this video, but, I really could not see exactly what position all the strips were in as you were connecting them, and that includes the second set of strips too. Can you recommend a video that is easier to see exactly what is being done? I want to make smaller saucer beads.

  5. The saucer beads are so lovely and joann makes it look so easy> I did try but mine came out like a large cone, so I am practicing and I will keep on practicing until I can make one. I love all your new designs they are so pretty I have made some myself and hopefully when my camera is fixed I will upload them to your site. I have made so many bracellets and necklaces and one charm bracelet that I cannot bear to sale to my friends as there so lovely,do you ever have this problem? love paper beads from jox

  10. Hi Janice,

Can’t wait to see that “zine” that you’re putting together.

  11. Lovely I love the various shapes and colors. Is there a book that is a how-to for different kinds and shapes?

    • Hi Sharon,

Thank you for visiting, I am working on a “zine” that will have how-to’s and inspirations and fun inserts. Janice

  12. Oh ! Merci ! Je ne comprenais pas comment on faisait ces perles.
    Thank you so much !

  13. I just got my Vibrance I ordered! I can’t wait to start making paper beads! I will try this.

  14. Those are so beautiful. On the video it looks so easy and effortless. When I try it it does not come out anywhere near as nice. In fact, I am fighting with all the strips to try to keep them under control. In the end they mostly won. Well done!

  15. Very impressive! It amazes me how many ways there are to roll a bead! Great video!

  16. Beautiful! I have to try this!

  17. Wow! Thank You So Much for showing us how to do this Janice! Big hugs to you Joann for making this video for all of us! Also the girl in the video sure looks so pretty too. By the way, what type of paint did you use?

    • Hi Deb,

The girl on the video is Junise, she is my sister’s step-daughter and she is an expert in making paper beads of all kinds! I think she uses acrylic paint. Janice

  18. Thank you for sharing this. All of you make it look so easy in the videos and I am all thumbs!! One question – in order to get trinagles 17 inches long are you first gluing magazine pages together before cutting the triangles?

    • Kathy,

They have the heavy duty cutter that cuts like a ream of paper. I think you can cut four pages at a time with a cutter and apply a little glue to the edges (just the edge of the base) to keep them together. Janice

  19. They just are amaaaaaaazing!

  20. thank you thank you thank you !!! i love these beads and i just can’t wait to try !
